The Grey Wardens
After The Joining, new Grey Wardens typically suffer from nightmares or prophetic dreams. These visions grow in strength during a Blight as the Archdemon becomes more active.
Any time a Grey Warden tries to take a long rest during a Blight, there is a 10% chance that they suffer from nightmares and visions. The Grey Warden gains no benefit from the rest and gains a level of exhaustion.
The DM may increase the chance of these dreams occurring if the Grey Warden is in close proximity to the Archdemon when they try to take a long rest.
The Grey Wardens are an order of warriors of exceptional ability dedicated to fighting darkspawn throughout Thedas. They are headquartered in the very place of their founding, the Weisshaupt Fortress in the Anderfels, but maintain a presence in most other nations as well.
The Grey Wardens are known for ignoring a recruit's racial, social, national, and even criminal background if they deem the person valuable in terms of character, ability, and skill.
Despite their small numbers, the Grey Wardens have been instrumental in defeating each Blight so far, and thus are vital to the survival of the world as a whole.
Becoming a Warden. It is possible for any Player Character to become a Grey Warden. There are no strict prerequisites for this, and it is not tied to class or level. The only qualification is that a Grey Warden thinks that the candidate has what it takes. Strength of will and a strong sense of duty are common attributes but sometimes unlikely candidates end up making the best Grey Wardens. Duncan, who eventually became the leader of the Grey Wardens in Ferelden, was naught but a street thief in Orlais when he was recruited to the order.
Those chosen go through a period of training. This can be as long or as short as the Warden trainer desires. It is uncommon for characters of less than level 6 to be chosen for the Joining, the perilous and enigmatic ritual that turns a recruit into a full-fledged Grey Warden. It is an elite order and normally only those who have proved themselves are given the chance to join its ranks.
If you become a Grey Warden, it will be a major event in the game. You will play through your training period and the Joining. If you survive and become a Grey Warden, you gain the following feat:
- Increase one of your ability scores by 1, to a maximum of 20.
- You have advantage on saving throws against poison, and you have resistance to poison damage.
- You are immune to the Taint. You can't be turned into a ghoul by darkspawn blood.
- You can detect darkspawn up to a number of feet equal to 10 x your level. You can make a Wisdom (Perception) check to find out more information, such as their rough numbers or even their type.
- All darkspawn have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made against you.
